Neurobiological Substrates of Illiteracy

چکیده
The brain can be understood as an organ that adapts to several types of internal and external influences. The interaction of these complex concurrent stimuli along life shapes the highly differentiated biologic arrangement of the brain and its consequent physiology, at any given time. The past years have seen a significant development of the knowledge about the neural substrate of language in its oral and written forms. This is, in part, the result of understanding acquired oral and written language disorders (see, for example, the reviews of Neville and Bavelier [1], Patterson and Ralph [2], and Price [3]), of studies on the influence of sensory deprivation on the harmony of the so-called normal development (4), and of functional brain scanning of normal subjects while they perform tasks related to these skills (5, 6). This brief review is based on the assumption that the neurobiology of oral and written language is generally understood as the result of the interaction of the following structures and mechanisms:

Genetically modified mice as tools to understand the neurobiological substrates of depression.
The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying depression are still poorly understood. An initial hypothesis postulated to explain the substrates of depression was based on the involvement of monoaminergic systems. This early theory was proposed from different findings obtained using pharmacological tools and can explain the mechanism of action of the drugs currently used to treat depression. How...
متن کاملNeurobiological substrates of Tourette's disorder.
OBJECTIVE This article reviews the available scientific literature concerning the neurobiological substrates of Tourette's disorder (TD). METHODS The electronic databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect, and PsycINFO were searched for relevant studies using relevant search terms. RESULTS Neuropathological as well as structural and functional neuroimaging studies of TD implicate not only the sensor...
متن کاملPoverty, Illiteracy cum Prosperity Theology: A Quantitative Study
Prosperity Theology is the teaching that believers have a right to the blessings of health and wealth and that they can obtain these blessings through positive confessions of faith and the “sowing of seeds” through the faithful payment of tithes and offerings. However, the literature reveals that most adherents to the prosperity gospel are not prospering financially and prosperity preachers hav...
متن کاملIn search of the neurobiological substrates for social playfulness in mammalian brains.
Play behavior is a fundamental and intrinsic neurobehavioral process in the mammalian brain. Using rough-and-tumble play in the juvenile rat as a model system to study mammalian playfulness, some of the relevant neurobiological substrates for this behavior have been identified, and in this review this progress. A primary-process executive circuit for play in the rat that includes thalamic intra...
